                                                          - Arun Iyer, IX std, Abhinav Vidyalay

In this part, many cold war events take place. Some event's mistakes could have devastated the world, and some events teach us that no one can stop humans from he/she's rights. These events carve great importance in history. This part is thrilling and has lots of twists you will enjoy and gain good history knowledge.

3) The Cuban Missile Crisis(October - November 1962)

The US was developing warfare technology. They built the nuclear missile which was first attacked on Hiroshima Nagasaki in WW2. On the other hand, the USSR was also developing warfare technology. The invention of the AK-47 gun and Mig - 21 was one of the greatest inventions. But, they were upset by the US nuclear technology. Then they conducted research and made their Nuclear technology. Nuclear technology was useful as well as harmful. It can destroy a whole nation. The US army built its nuclear base in Europe for protection from the USSR. The nuclear base firing range was till Moscow which was the Capital of the USSR . Seeing this, the USSR also wanted to construct its nuclear base so that it could protect its alliance.

The USSR and Cuba were in an alliance because both Nations were communist nations. Cuba is informed that it is in threat by the  USA. Both the USSR and Cuba had meetings and treaties. The solution was to build a nuclear base in Cuba in February 1962. The nuclear base will create chaos in the USA. This treaty was secretly done between President of USSR Nikita Khrushchev and Dictator of Cuba Fidel Castro. The USSR started constructing its base. During this construction the US felt something So. the CIA(Central Intelligence Agency) started its investigation in Cuba, They took Aerial photos and found the constructing nuclear base. Also, the submarines from the USSR sailing to Cuba had Nuclear missiles. Seeing this, US president  John F Kennedy ordered the navy to stop the USSR submarines. The action was taken by US navy ships blocking the way of submarines. It was the time when WW3 may be taken. The treaty and talks between the USA and USSR stopped this crisis and the world became peaceful. During this India had to suffer Because of the Indo-Sino war which was fought during this period. China was waiting for this time to attack India.

4) Fall of East Germany

After the separation of Germany in East and West Germany, many issues occurred on the border. In East Germany the government was providing free education and healthcare but yet there were no jobs. People from East Germany started migrating towards West Germany for jobs, illegally. The East German government started putting tripwires on the border but, yet the migration was taken. Then the USSR and East Germany built a wall that divides East and west. Also, the Wall was built in Berlin. The Soviet Union wanted to capture the whole of Germany. That's why they built a wall. People in East Germany were suffering a lot from the dictatorial government. Many peaceful protests against East Germany. Lots of pressure came on East Germany and the USSR. The USSR was slowly collapsing. In 1987 Ronald Reagan, the US president came to West Germany and gave a powerful speech “Gorbachev(USSR President) pull down this wall”. Due to many problems and the drowning of the USSR, East Germany declared to break the wall and unite Germany. This initiative was declared in a historical press conference. The East German government speaker has not read the whole law properly and said the wrong date when this initiative will be forced that he said after this press conference. People from East Germany and West Germany started breaking the wall, Germans were happy and again getting united. This Berlin wall fall marked the end of East Germany and the drowning of the USSR. This fall marked that no one can stop people from the rights they should get.

5) Collapse of USSR

The USSR collapse process started from 1988-1991. The main causes of the collapse were a drowning economy, constant war, and being politically unstable. The Soviet Union had many oil fields, cheap weapons, and industrial manufacturing. They invested lots of finance in wars. The Afghanistan invasion made the Soviet economy in drought. They were humiliated and they had to remove the army. Constant wars made it politically unstable.  As it was a proxy war they supplied weapons to their support countries which made them enter the war. There was instability in their alliance that made them weaker. Sino- Soviet war was one of the examples, the Soviet Union which supported China in always, that China attacked the Soviet Union.  When Mikhail Gorbachev came into power and became President of the USSR, he implemented laws freed from little dictatorship. He applied freedom of speech and tried to make foreign investments for a better economy. But, this became the mark for the collapse of the Soviet Union and more economic loss. People started knowing the truths of the Soviet Union. Princely states of the Soviet Union started protesting against the government. The government told the army to attack them but the army denied it and said they wouldn't attack their people. Protests erupted and many states declared themselves as princely states. The foreign investment idea made the Soviet communist party unhappy.  Economies of India, China, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea overtook the Soviet economy. Then on August 25, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned and on 26 August 1991 USSR collapsed into Lithuania, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus, Transnistria, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Poland, Chechnya, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The end of the USSR marked the end of the cold war. The USA won the war of superpower. Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel peace prize. The world became peaceful.

Annual Day 2023

After a long hiatus due to covid we finally got most activities on track. The Annual Day function is always a big deal for everyone at Abhinav. It has been a tradition my mother started that the Annual Day will be not a Teacher-managed event, but a Student Initiative. Since when I was a teenager, I was part of this and today 10 years after she passed, I still strive to make it work as she would have. After some hesitation, we began working in early January. I wanted to use an outside choreographer just so that teachers will not be burdened. (They are already struggling with post-covid learning difficulties) But then, an outside guy could never do justice to the Abhinav style of doing things. We always keep in mind that the cultural program should be enjoyable to everyone in the audience and at the same time should display as many of the diverse talents that our students have, as possible.  It was a great relief that my G3 students came to the rescue. Almost all of std 9 and m...

Are Self-Driving Cars Taking Over Humans?

- Arya Dharmadhikari(Std X, Abhinav Vidyalay) The 21st century has played an important role in the advancement of technologies. This development has even revolutionized the Automobile industry. We have developed from fuel-efficient vehicles to Hybrids and EVs and now we are enhancing self-driving vehicles. Tesla, Waymo, Volvo, GM, BMW, Mercedes are among the few companies that have started testing self-driving cars. The leading among them is Waymo, which has developed level 4 autonomy which we will discuss in the next section. So before reaching levels of autonomy we should understand what self-driving cars are and why we require them. What is a self-driving car? A self-driving car (also called an autonomous vehicle) is a car that is competent in driving itself without any human intervention. The car has sensors, cameras, lasers, radars, GPS, LIDAR through which the Artificial Intelligence senses the surrounding environment, this helps the car to navigate on its path and to detect sig...

Dark Matter

~Anvi Patil(X th A Abhinav Vidyalay) In the universe, there is about 25% of dark matter and 70% of dark energy but only 5% of it is visible. What is Dark Matter? It is a non-luminous material, which holds two galaxies. This cannot be called a black hole because it does not bend light. Then the question arrives, as it is non-luminous, how did we detect it? As it is not visible, scientists have found indirect methods to find more about it. One such method is by using the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope . Gamma rays are released when two particles of dark matter collide, Fermi telescope can be used to detect this collision. This topic was discovered by Fritz Zwicky in the 1930s, he discovered that galaxies were rotating at a faster rate than usual. A dark region seen in the foreground of a star field. This dark region could be a dark cloud of gases like hydrogen, left over from the formation of our galaxy Dark matter is called ‘dark’ not because it is ‘black’ but because it does...
