Ever since the Covid-19 Pandemic struck the globe, we all have been forced to stay inside our homes. Due to this, the cinema/film industry has suffered a lot financially. With many theatres being closed in India and all over the world, most new film releases faced bad luck at the box office and were not able to sell many tickets. One film, however, broke all these restrictions.Demon Slayer Mugen Train, or as it is called in Japanese, Kimetsuno Yaiba: Mugen Train is a Japanese anime film released on 16th October 2020 in Japan that shattered all previous box office records amid the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Demon Slayer Mugen Train is a direct continuation of the massively successful anime show Demon Slayer season 1 (released in 2019). Season 1 follows Tanjiro Kamado, as he sets off on an intense journey to turn his sister Nezuko, who had turned into a demon, back to a human. The film picks up right from the ending of season 1 and has our protagonist and his friends go against newer and tougher hurdles in their journey while aboard a train.
The story presents itself in a way that is heart-wrenching and satisfying to watch unfold. The film as well as season 1 are animated by studio Ufotable. Though the film has many strong points, such as an astounding soundtrack, I would say the ‘strongest’ of those strong points has to be the animation. I ensure you while watching every scene of this movie, you can feel how much effort has been put into animating it.
If we talk about numbers, the film has excelled in that field as well. Even though it was released in the middle of a pandemic, Demon Slayer Mugen Train managed to earn over a whopping 470 Million US Dollars worldwide (most of it coming from Japan). This makes it the Highest Earning Japanese Film of All Time and the Highest Earning Film of 2020 Worldwide. Following its financial success worldwide, Demon Slayer Mugen Train was finally officially released in Indian theatres on 13th August 2021, though only in select cities such as Delhi.
This must have given you an idea about the scale of popularity of the anime franchise Demon Slayer. A story that is better than a majority of the stories you must have seen in traditional cinema. With the success of this film, it is expected that the popularity chart of Japanese Animation (Anime) is only going to keep rising upwards in India and all over the world.
